NCIC faults the KDF Operations in Laikipia

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has strongly condemned the excessive use of force in Rumuruti, Laikipia County by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF). The KDF operations resulted into the death of a pupil and quantities of property destroyed on Tuesday 29thAugust 2017. The forces had been deployed in the region to tame and flush out the criminals who were causing instability among the communities residing in the county.

In a press statement sent to news rooms on Tuesday 29th August 2017, the NCIC Chairperson Hon. Francis Ole Kaparo strongly condemned the incident, terming it unfortunate and recipe for further tension in the region. He took the opportunity to send condolences to the families and friends of the bereaved, as well as those who lost their property in the melee.

In his address, the Commission welcomed the ongoing KDF operations, and pledged to engage the Ministry of Defense to ensure peaceful processes are undertaken in the region or any other.

He also called on to the end of mass destruction of property witnessed, including burning of houses and killing of livestock. He noted that such actions would only result in the building up of more tension among the different communities in the county. “Indeed, this is a threat to the fragile peace and cohesion in this region. We are calling for speedy investigations in the matter to avoid a repeat of the same,” said Hon. Kaparo in the statement.

Nonetheless, the Chairperson emphasized on the need to have all Kenyans living in a safe and peaceful environment. He urged Laikipia residents to exercise patience and tolerance while desisting from taking the law into their hands, as all relevant stakeholders, including the Commission, work towards an agreeable approach in the ongoing operations.
